Creating A
Physical Preparation Program For Fire Service

Regular physical training can not only be the difference between life or death, but is also a major influence on job performance and quality of life.  This valuable course explains the fundamental principles that govern all training programs.  Attendees will learn the importance of activity analysis, specific prescription, and appropriate administration of an annual fitness plan.  Principles such as load, intensity, and volume will be explored.

10:30 - 11:00
Training Without Equipment - Bodyweight Training

This hands-on presentation shows how even with the most limited resources it is possible to exercise effectively using equipment that is readily available at every firehouse.  Attendees will learn exercises that can be done at their firehouse, or at home.

11:00 - 12:00
Developing an Effective On-The-Job Nutrition Plan

Hectic schedules and unpredictable job demands trigger poor eating habits, weight gain, and increased health risk.  This important introduces attendees to the three energy yielding compounds: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and explains the important role of each nutrient.  The principles of weight gain and loss are discovered, and common nutrition myths are dispelled.  Finally, attendees will learn how to identify potential nutritional pitfalls in their nutrition plan.

12:00 - 1:00
Lunch Break

1:00 - 4:00
Implementation of Fire Service Specific Strength, Endurance, and Coordination

Lugging a hose up stairs, hooking a line to a hydrant, dragging a victim from a building, and climbing ladders all have one thing in common - the use of total body power, explosiveness, and endurance.  The principle of total body coordination and force production will first be revealed in a short lecture, and attendees will then learn exercises with medicine balls, plyometrics, core training, agility training, and much more through hands-on participation.

Schedules and topics may be subject to change without notice.
